Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Gameplay
Creative spells plus weapons-master melee in a dark open world
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is a real-time, third-person action-adventure, not a dice-driven CRPG. Invoke Studios built the loop around a warlock’s tabletop identity — at-will blasts, a dangerous patron, a blade pact — then threw out spell slots and party initiative. You play only Kaatri. You read Darkon, spend Raw Magic, and combine a controller-mapped toolkit with two equipped weapons. This hub is the systems map; spell names live on the spells hub, story names on characters and world.
The thesis in one paragraph
Every problem has more than one legal solution. That is the line Jeff Hattem and Dominic Guay repeated after Gamescom. A gap might be a Misty Step through a grate, a Black Tentacles platform, a Levitate-and-slam on a crate, or a raven slip through a small opening (mentioned in later previews). A packed courtyard might be a Downpour ritual, a Witch Bolt into wet metal, a Fey Switch out of a Watcher’s path, or a Tasha’s Leash throw. Melee is how a weapons master ends the conversation once magic has written the first sentence. Read combat and exploration as two uses of one kit, not two games duct-taped together.
Three layers of magic
Cantrips (Eldritch Blast, Witch Bolt, Gust of Wind, Levitate in current coverage) stay available. Advanced spells (Fey Switch, Black Tentacles) slow time on cast and then go on cooldown. Rituals (Downpour) take longer, need components found in the world, and rewrite local weather or other large conditions. Details: cantrips vs advanced and rituals. Do not invent mana bars; Invoke has not published one. Cooldowns and components are the costs that have been described.
Melee and Pact of the Blade
Kaatri was a weapons master before the pact. The Gamescom loadout showed a warhammer and a sword, two weapons equipped at once, find-and-upgrade language, and summoned otherworldly melee as a closer after tentacles, levitate, or leash setups. Weapons and Pact of the Blade keep that grounded. There is no public damage table. There is a public fantasy: magic opens, steel finishes — or magic finishes if you built the board that way.
Exploration as spell literacy
Darkon is an open world with settlements, dungeons, mists, and ability gates. Preview coverage describes towns for upgrades, NPCs, and quests; a raven form for tight geometry; and spells reused as platforming verbs. How to explore Darkon is the field guide. Raw Magic is the progression hook Tasha points at: find hidden power, expand the kit.
Controls, as far as they go
Guay said spells are directly available on the controller at all times, without a selection wheel for the regular list. Rituals are the menu. Keyboard maps, accessibility toggles, and exact face-button layouts are unpublished. Controls records what exists and refuses to fake the rest. Full controller support is on Steam, including Xbox and PlayStation pads — see platforms.
How to study the footage
Watch the Gamescom reveal recap, then the beat-by-beat how to play pass, then how to combo magic with the IGN interview. If you only care whether this is “like God of War with D&D spells,” the preview is the evaluation desk. If you want loadout sketches, spell loadouts and the spell combo planner are the toys.
This is still a 2027 game. Anything numeric you see on social is unofficial. This hub will grow when Invoke publishes a longer toolkit, a skill screen, or a HUD legend. Until then, literacy beats speculation.
