Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Warlock Combat Guide

Set the board with magic, then close as a weapons master

Combat

Combat in Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is real-time and deliberately unfair in your favor if you prepare the space. Invoke does not ask you to stand in a circle and spend slots. It asks you to notice rain, metal, ledges, monster spacing, and your two equipped weapons. The Gamescom footage and follow-up interviews describe a loop: observe, reshape, punish. Melee is not a backup when you “run out of magic.” Cantrips do not run out. Melee is how Kaatri, who was a weapons master first, cashes a setup.

Openers versus finishers

Cantrips are the conversation starters. Eldritch Blast is the accurate long-range force beam for deleting objects and tagging enemies at range, with coverage mentioning a chaining variant. Witch Bolt deals lightning, stuns, and becomes more interesting once anything nearby is wet or metallic. Gust of Wind shoves bodies and objects, fans flames, or clears gas. Levitate lifts a target or a prop and lets you slam it. These tools stay on the pad. Details sit on cantrips vs advanced and the spells list.

Advanced spells change the geometry of a fight. Black Tentacles pin anything that steps close — an ogre, a weapon, a chunk of masonry. Fey Switch trades places with a monster, which is how preview writers described surviving a Watcher in a dungeon: you do not tank the grab, you become someone else’s problem. Tasha’s Leash (a game-original tendril grab) pulls a body or an object into Kaatri’s hands so she can throw it. Time slows on these casts, then a cooldown starts. That slow-mo is your window to pick the follow-up, not a cutscene.

Rituals are pre-fight, not mid-combo spam. Downpour lays a localized storm if you have spent the components. After that, Witch Bolt into a metal pole behind a group is the showcase example Xbox Wire described. Read rituals before you treat weather as an ultimate button.

Weapons master closer

Once a target is pinned, lifted, or isolated, Kaatri closes with summoned or found steel. The demo used a warhammer and a sword. Coverage describes throwing a levitated blade, ripping a sword off an ogre with the leash, and landing a jump as a melee hit. Two weapons equipped, more found and upgraded in the world — that is the entire public economy. Weapons and Pact of the Blade refuse to invent attack ratings.

Enemies shown, not a bestiary

Public footage and write-ups name or clearly show: a Watcher, an ogre-class brute, undead and apparitions in the D&D horror register, and packed groups in courtyards and on roads. Azalin Rex is lore, not a confirmed boss card. Do not build a fake raid tier list. How to beat enemies walks the patterns that were actually filmed. How to combo magic is the interview-backed theory class.

Positioning is a spell

Fey Switch, Misty Step (incorporeal short teleport, including through some grates, or hold still to avoid a hit), and the long jump with optional melee landing are defensive tools as much as movement toys. A warlock who only blasts from mid-range is playing half the class fantasy. Exploration uses the same verbs to cross gaps. If a fight feels cramped, ask whether you have failed to rewrite the room rather than failed to “DPS.”

What we will not pretend to know

Health values, poise, difficulty modes, accessory slots, and whether Hex exists are unpublished. CBR hoped Hex might appear because it is a tabletop staple; hope is not a tooltip. When a HUD legend exists, this page will cite it. Until then, train the habits the footage rewards: soak the ground, pin the big thing, swap with the scary thing, throw the loose thing, then swing.

Pair this page with spell combos, the combo planner, and how to play. Combat is the same language as traversal. If you only study one, you will fight like a wizard with a sword glued on. Kaatri is a warlock who used to end arguments with steel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers drawn from official Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons reveals and studio interviews.

Does combat use dice?

No. Invoke has been explicit: this is a video-game action layer, not a digital tabletop.

What is the Watcher?

A dungeon threat shown in Gamescom coverage. Kaatri escapes by swapping places with another monster rather than eating the attack.

Are weapons optional?

Kaatri is a Pact of the Blade warlock and a former weapons master. Magic sets up; melee is a first-class closer, not a last resort.

Can I stunlock everything?

Witch Bolt stuns and Black Tentacles hold, but cooldowns, components, and enemy variety are still being revealed. Do not assume infinite locks.
