Witch Bolt in Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons
Lightning that stuns and jumps through water and steel
Official tooltip: deal lightning damage and stun enemies; gains potency and propagates within conductive nearby targets, such as liquids and metals. That sentence is why Downpour exists on a battlefield. Xbox Wire watched Kaatri call rain, then throw Witch Bolt not at the pack but at a metal pole behind them. Lightning, metal, and wet ground did the rest. Jeff Hattem told press that weather-plus-bolt sequence was not an authored set piece. Treat it as a systems claim.
Cantrip job
Coverage groups Witch Bolt with pad-facing cantrips: always there, not a menu. It is not Eldritch Blast. Blast is force at range. Witch Bolt is lightning plus stun plus a reason to care about puddles. Gust of Wind can fan flames; Witch Bolt wants the opposite weather. How to use spells is choose the cheapest layer that does the job. If the courtyard is dry, blast or tentacles. If you already paid for Downpour, Witch Bolt is the payoff.
Do not invent chain-lightning ranks. “Propagates within conductive nearby targets” is the legal text. How many bodies, how much falloff, whether a second pole is worth it — unpublished.
Combo partners that were actually shown
- Downpour — localized storm, drench the field, then bolt the metal. See rituals and combos.
- Black Tentacles — hold the ogre still so you can aim at the world instead of a moving hitbox.
- Tasha’s Leash — steal the steel after the stun, because Pact of the Blade still wants a weapon in hand.
- Water from the world — Xbox Wire also saw telekinesis pull pond water onto a fire. Wet ground is not only a ritual. If a later clip shows Witch Bolt through a yanked puddle, it belongs here.

What this page will not do
No damage numbers. No “best rain build.” Hattem mentioned talismans that synergize with favorite spells; none are named Witch Bolt charms yet. Spell loadouts can sketch weather-first thinking without a spreadsheet. Combat is where stunned bodies meet steel. Mysteries might one day ask you to power a dead machine with a wet bolt. We have not seen that machine.
Dry fights still exist
Not every Gamescom courtyard is a storm. If you only practice rain-then-pole, you will freeze on a dry ridge. Eldritch Blast still tags. Black Tentacles still hold. Otherworldly Leap still closes. Witch Bolt on dry ground is still a stun if the tooltip is honest — “deal lightning damage and stun” does not require a puddle. Conduction is the bonus, not the permission slip. How to beat enemies should stay Watcher-swap and ogre-pin first, weather second. Crickshank streets may be wet from weather, blood, or a yanked trough; do not assume a Downpour icon over every cobble. When a UI shows a conductivity highlight, screenshot it onto this page. Until then, look at metal and liquid with your own eyes, the way Xbox Wire described the pole. A wet trough in Crickshank is still a conductor even if you never opened the ritual kit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers drawn from official Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons reveals and studio interviews.
Does Witch Bolt need Downpour?
No. Downpour makes conduction easier. Official copy already includes liquids and metals in the world, not only ritual rain.
Should I aim at enemies or at metal?
Xbox Wire's demo aimed at a pole behind a group so the shock jumped. That is a shown tactic, not a requirement.
Is it a cantrip or advanced spell?
Press groups it with always-available lightning. Invoke has not published a full layer table with this name isolated.
Was the rain-plus-bolt clip scripted?
Jeff Hattem said it was not an authored set piece. It is still a vertical-slice demo, not a live match.
