Misty Step in Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons

Become incorporeal and teleport short distances — or hold your ground and dodge

Last updated:

Misty Step

The official Warlock site describes Misty Step in one sentence: become incorporeal to teleport short distances, even through certain grates, or remain in place to avoid damage. That is the whole tooltip. It sits in the partial grimoire alongside Eldritch Blast, Witch Bolt, Gust of Wind, Levitate, Fey Switch, Black Tentacles, Tasha’s Leash, a long jump, and the Downpour ritual. Invoke has not said much else publicly. This page is the teleport, not the table lookup.

Mobility and traversal tool, not a disengage button

Tabletop readers know Misty Step as a bonus-action escape hatch — step 30 feet, avoid opportunity attacks, feel clever. Invoke’s version carries that spirit but fits it into a real-time action context. The tooltip gives you two choices every time you trigger it: teleport forward through a grate, or stay put and let the incorporeal phase absorb a hit. That duality is the design hook. You are not just leaving a threatened square; you are deciding whether to leave or whether to endure by vanishing in place.

The grate-passing detail is the traversal headline. Darkon, as a Domain of Dread, is a place of crumbling architecture, sealed corridors, and passages that should not be walkable. A teleport that threads through certain grates means Kaatri can skip climbs, bypass locked doors, or cross pits that would otherwise demand a different tool. Exploration will map which grates are passable; this page owns the spell that exploits them.

Coverage groups Misty Step with at-will pad tools — spells that never need a long-rest resource, never require components, and never open a slow menu. That makes it a first responder. Something goes wrong in combat: you do not scroll to a list, you tap and the incorporeal phase either moves you or saves your position. The controls page covers the input rhythm.

How it sits next to other tools

Fey Switch is the panic teleport in the same grimoire — Invoke lists them together and players will contrast them. Fey Switch presumably swaps Kaatri somewhere else with a different condition or range. Misty Step is the one with grate-threading and the stay-and-dodge option. Black Tentacles locks an area down; Misty Step gets you out of that area without touching the tentacles. Levitate raises you over obstacles; Misty Step phases through them. Otherworldly Leap adds vertical distance but not incorporeality — you jump, you do not vanish. Gust of Wind pushes; Misty Step replaces your position. Tasha’s Leash steals a weapon; Misty Step gets you close enough to steal it. Witch Bolt marks a target; Misty Step closes the gap before the beam is ready. The combo page connects these edges.

The spells hub has the full partial grimoire. Cantrips and advanced draws the line between pad-available spells and those that demand a commit. Spell loadouts puts Misty Step in a kit alongside Pact of the Blade choices. Raw Magic is where any undiscovered interaction lives until it is confirmed.

What this page refuses

No invented range past “short distances.” No made-up cooldown. No rank in a tier list. No invocation that Invoke has not published. The “Notes on spells/misty-step-XX-0 stay unique” line means every variation identifier under this spell belongs to this wiki only — do not borrow a classification from a D&D 5e SRD spell block and paste it as fact.

Watch for the incorporeal visual in trailers. If Kaatri flickers, glows, or dissolves before teleporting, that is Misty Step. If she vanishes and reappears elsewhere without a visual, that is also Misty Step. If a later trailer shows a grate that she passes through mid-combat, that grate-passing detail is confirmed. Until confirmed, the tooltip is the contract.

Kaatri is a veteran weapons master; a teleport spell does not change her melee identity, it protects it. Tasha is the patron behind much of Kaatri’s published magic. Skev is not the caster. The Domains of Dread, Darkon, and Crickshank are the confirmed geography. How to play, how to use spells, how to combo magic, how to find Raw Magic, how to explore Darkon, and how to beat enemies are the guided arcs.

Platform and release context

What we still refuse to invent on this page: any range past “short distances,” any cooldown, any invocation, any DPS value, any skill-tree entry, any talisman name, any confirmed interaction with Pact of the Blade beyond what Invoke has published. Notes on spells/misty-step-XX-0 stay unique to this wiki.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers drawn from official Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons reveals and studio interviews.

Is Misty Step a cantrip in Warlock the video game?

Coverage groups it with at-will pad tools. Invoke has not published a spell slot table. Treat it as always available, not as a resource you ration after a long rest.

What does the incorporeal phase do exactly?

The tooltip says you become incorporeal to teleport short distances or remain in place to avoid damage. The phase itself is the defensive window — you either use it to move through a grate or to absorb an incoming hit by staying.

Can Misty Step pass through any grate in Darkon?

The tooltip specifies "certain grates." Not every grate is passable. Exploration of Darkon's architecture will reveal which ones thread the teleport and which ones do not.

How is Misty Step different from Fey Switch?

Invoke lists both in the same grimoire. Misty Step is the one with grate-threading and the stay-and-dodge option. Fey Switch presumably swaps Kaatri somewhere else with a different trigger condition. They are both panic teleports but with distinct mechanics.
